Forest2Market Product Spotlight: SilvaStat360 Precipitation Data

Since rolling out the cutting-edge SilvaStat360 platform last year, Forest2Market continues to develop innovative solutions for the entire forest value chain. SilvaStat360 is the only flexible, customizable digital environment that provides Forest2Market customers with the on-demand data that is most important to them.

As we continue to add new features and functionality to the platform that are uniquely beneficial for participants in the forest products industry, the latest addition is a precipitation tab that covers the four primary wood baskets in the US. The data is updated monthly and allows users to filter by date, region, state and county to get an accurate and granular view of precipitation trends over time.

For example, we can perform a precipitation analysis of a region hard hit by Hurricane Florence in September. We can zoom in on eastern North Carolina and look at rainfall totals from August through October 2018 to get a before/after picture of the event.

There are a few darker green areas in the southeast that demonstrate noticeable coloring toward the "maximum" end of the scale; Onslow County stands out as the darkest shaded area. We can then filter even further to see the detail for that particular county.

As we drill down further into the 2018 precipitation trend for Onslow county, we can see that the year started off dry with rainfall totals under average amounts before moving back to average during the summer months. But the monthly trend line thereafter shows a huge spike in September, representing the 26.561” of rain that were a result of Hurricane Florence before dropping off again in October.

If we adjust the date to look at a broader period of time (10 years, in this case) we can still see the effects that Hurricane Florence had on the county: 76.37” YTD compared to 56.75” as an historical average for the 10-year period.

All of this data can be analyzed in a number of ways using the precipitation tab, and users can save search filters, download customized images or print charts right from their screens. When used in conjunction with the other analytics available on SilvaStat360, the precipitation tab adds even more helpful functionality to the platform, which is the only tool that allows you to access all of this data in a single place.
